Events/Results - RoadAA Brown Trophy Elite Men's Road Race 5th August 2007
Race Distance: 127km Three of the Team MK road squad converged on the village of Naseby for the Duncan Murray Wines - AA Brown Trophy Elite Men's Road Race. Mike Wragg, James Fox and Richard Wood were amongst about 60 starters who were ready to do battle under very hot and testing conditions.
The race was made up of 6 laps of approx. 21 km, the course was fast for first part with speeds of up to 45mph being seen on the tail wind A road section. The last part of the lap was far grippier, with a few short climbs followed by a long, relatively steep drag up to the finish line.
The race started hard and fast, with small groups trying to form a break off the front of the bunch. At the foot of main climb the race was all together, but spurred on by a first lap prime, Matt Barrett and Rich Wood rode away from the bunch to contest the sprint, which ended up with Barrett the victor. This however caused a break in the bunch with a small group bridging across to the leading duo to form the eventual race winning break. The leading group of 10 quickly built a lead of well over a minute by the second time through the finish.
The leaders worked efficiently together and come the last lap were still all together along the fast A road section leading to the hilly return leg. Wood took it upon himself to whittle the break group down by attacking hard on the first of the grippy climbs, breaking away for about 2 miles on his own before being joined by Barrett, Tim Wallis and Oliver Graham. This small group stayed together to the foot of the finish climb, at which point another attack came from Tim Wallis. Both Barrett and Graham were able to jump onto his wheel leaving Wood to suffer alone, finishing in 4th place.
Rich Wood leads the break
Mike Wragg had a good steady race to finish in a well deserved 19th place. James fell victim to the hot conditions and climbed off after 3 laps.
Many thanks to Steve (Mike’s Dad) for handing up bottles to the team during the race.
