Neil Gardner Road Race

Sat, 12th Aug 2007

The latest round of the Eastern Road Race League was the Neil Gardner Memorial Road Race promoted by CC Luton for 2/3/4 cats. The Team MK lineup for this event was National Champion Pete Smith, Mike Wragg and Paul Londors, back from a lengthy enforced break after a Thursday evening crash at the Bowl earlier in the year.

The race got underway in fine weather on the Cranfield 'tricky triangle' circuit, having been moved from Old Warden due to roadworks.  A points competition and spot primes livened up an already-nervous bunch, with attack after attack going up the road, most notably from local man Nick Jones.  Then the decisive break came at around 2/3 distance, containing most of the men to watch. Smith and Wragg saw the danger and reacted, forming a second chase group but never having the firepower needed to close the ten leaders down.  Coming into the finishing straight for the final time, and beginning to wind up their sprint, the seven chasers saw riders down on the road in what looked a very nasty crash. Mike and Pete picked up 8th and 10th respectively, refusing their prize money in favour of the five fallen riders.
