National Relay Champs

Sat, 11th August 2007

400m/15k/5k

28 triathletes from TeamMK made up 7 teams of 4 at the National Relay Championships at Holme Pierrepoint just south of Nottingham. The weather was scorching and the event was fully subscribed for the first ever time, with 400 teams in attendance.

The day was split into a morning race starting at 9am for all teams that contained women (this included our two mixed teams) and an afternoon race starting at 2pm for the rest of the men. The format was that each member of a team would complete a discipline before handing over to the next team member for that same disciplne until all 4 members had completed the discipline. The next discipline would then be started by team member one etc.

The morning race was won by a team from Total Fitness in 3:11:44. TeamMK "Doc" including (Doug Mace, Jean Limpitlaw, Michelle Gander and Ed Yabsley) were in the top half of the field in 88th position in 3:48:07. TeamMK "Bashful" (Corinne Price, Martin Erasmus, Toni Heap and Andy Jones) were close behind in 101st in a time of 3:51:21. In fact these teams swapped the lead with each other a number of times before TeamMK "Doc"s better running proved decisive. Also in the mix in 85th were Thames Valley Police 2, containing Al Nisbit, Kerry Farmer and Kirsty Bishop. Thames Valley Police 1, containing Abi Gooch and Ants Cossar were 157th.

The afternoon race was won by a team from Total Fitness in 2:57:04. TeamMK "Happy" including (Dann Brook, Dave Glossy, Dave Brown and Ollie Howton) alternated 1st position with the TFN team, finally giving best on the run section and ending in 2nd position in 2:59.34.

TeamMK "Sleepy" (Adam Teal, John Dennis, Jamie Hawthorne and David Chapman) were chasing the vets TeamMK "Dopey" (Daren Haseldine, Mark Booth, Duncan McLaren and Robin Dowswell) for most of the race until overtaking them in the run section. Unfortunately Mark Booth was unable to do his run leg due to a calf injury and so a brave Duncan McLaren agreed to do two legs, which left the vets with an impossible task of retaking "Sleepy" on the last run leg.

TeamMK "Sneezy" (Darren Smith, Lee Goodman, David Abraham and Marcus Whelband) had a close tussle with 2nd vets TeamMK "Grumpy" (Mark Kleanthous, Mark Church, Phil Bilton and Trevor Hook). The old "Grumpies" trailed "Sneezy" after the swim, only to overtake them on the bike before "Sneezy's" rapid running took it back in front again.
