Milton Keynes Council announce the Cycle~MK Sportive on Sunday 28th March 2010, organized by Team Milton Keynes in conjunction with Race Timing Systems and on behalf of the Milton Keynes Cycling Association, which represents 25 local cycling clubs.
This event will offer a serious challenge for the experienced rider with distances of 100k and 100m.
The Headquarters of the event is the world famous National Bowl in Milton Keynes and both the start and finish will include a lap of the Bowl. The event will feature a live results area and other events and innovations which we hope to make the event a memorable one.
The Sportive has been themed around one of Milton Keynes most famous locations - no not the concrete cows or the roundabouts, but Bletchley Park, the location where the Enigma code was broken during the World War II. Colossus was the name of the computer, and Bletchey Park was "Station X" and Hanslope Park "Station Y". On this sportive you will be Turing right and Turing left.
There is a choice of 2 sportive distances:
Codebreaker - 100km (60 miles) in length with one feed station (Feed Station X).
Colossus - 100 miles (170km) in length with two feed stations (Feed Stations X & Y).
The 2 courses will be the common until after the first feed at Feed Station X, after approximately 30 miles (50km), at Cranfield University Sports Hall (Wharley End). There will be a timing map and shortly thereafter there will be a Boolean choice as the 2 rides will divide, with the Codebreaker returning to the finish in approximately another 30 miles (50km).
Colossus will take a longer loop back to the Bowl and there will be a further Feed Station Y after 60m (100km) at Silverstone Recreation Association, The Pavilion, Church Street, Silverstone NN12 8XA. There will be a further timing mats as the King of the Mountains climb at Pitchcott, which is at the most southerly part of the route. This which will be timed and will also serve to clarify who has ridden the Colossus route.
The HQ is at The National Bowl (www.thenationalbowl.net) and the sportive will start with a lap of the Bowl and exit onto Watling Street, which will be closed for the duration of the event.
Once out of the City boundaries the routes take in some iconic places on route, ie Grand Union Canal, Woburn Abbey, Cranfield University Campus & Aerodrome, Emberton Park (home of MK tri), Hanslope Park (the real station Y), Towcester Race Course, Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit, Stowe School etc
The 2 routes coincided again at Whaddon, just outside the City limits, and retrace the route back to The Bowl where you will finish, "Paris-Roubaix" style with a lap of the circuit and cross the timing mat under the gantry.
