25 Jan 2010 - 09:57Hello from a new member riding RAB (Race Across Britain)

Hello,

Just thought I would introduce myself as I have recently joined your club.

I'm Gregory Pattinson but more commonly known as Pat.

Started cycling about 3 years ago after doing a couple of London To Paris runs for the British Legion.

I've signed up for the Cracknell RAB (J. O'Groats to Lands End) so I am looking forward to learning the cycling etiquette, road training and group riding thing.

Thought I would start with the 'social' riding group on the Saturday rides to guage my competency and stamina level so any advice and help would be greatly appreciated.

Hope to see some of you very soon.

PS. Who should I make a bee line for to intro myself on the Saturday ride?

Hey Pat

welcome to the club.  You probably want to head for Mike Fitsell

He'll be along here shortly, I'm sure.

Jevon

Hi Pat and welcome

Jevon would normally be right on looking out for me but unfortunately I can't make the ride this Saturday 30th.

I don't know who will be leading the ride yet but keep an eye out on these forums and hopefully all will be revealed soon!

No doubt I'll catch up with you on another Saturday morning ride in the future.

Welcome on board.

Quite a few of the club have done the E2E.  Group did LEJOG in 2008 and there were some reports on the website.  Richard Harrison loaded the whole route on his Garmin.

Back in the good old days (before GPS) we had to use cut up OS to keep the weight down and kept sending them home, when we did it unsupported (unlike the TMK softies) in 2003 JOGLE.  ie start at the top so all downhill - easy!.

Left Friday night from CMK station.  Train to Watford.  Sleeper up to Inverness then a couple of trains up to Thurso.  Rode to JOG and stayed in a 'hotel'. Sunday morning departed with B&B booked for the following 13 nights, and arrived Land's End on a Sat afternoon.  Stayed in Senner Cove and then train back Sunday morning, and arrived back in MK in the afternoon - cycled home.

I will add a link to a previous post as we are in the publicity shot for RAB - did you notice the TMK kit?

Hello Geoff, thanks.

Sounds like a lot of fun but i'm a sucker for technology and making anything I do easier!!

Looking forward to the whole experience though, Although after last saturdays ride (in some terrible icy country lanes) I do realise I need to do a lot more training to make my own life easier.

Regards.

Pat can you send us a report of your adventure, ideally on a daily basis as it would be most interesting to see how you get on.

Just signed up for the Tour of Wessex, but only 3 days of 100+ miles.

Hi Pat

Tony and I are also doing RAB - we've been following the "club" training plan to the letter so are wondering why the average speed is plummeting! Even been riding in the snow and ice on the mountain bikes to keep the mileage up...sad or what?

We're doing a couple of the KILO to GO sportifs to get some 100 milers in the bank and are off to Tasmania in a couple of weeks to circumnavigate the island. This will also get us used to camping after a long day in the saddle. No B&Bs for us eh?

Also booked up to do the Big Cow training camp in Rimini in April to get some more hills in.

Looking forward to the challenge - hope we can get together for a ride

cheers

Corinne

Corinne Tony Pat

If you want some B2B training then just try out 3 local sportives over Easter.

But start with the Welwyn Hilly time trial on Good Friday to warm up

Sat is now Tour of Ouse Valley from Cranfield

Sun is Suzi Quattro sportive from Devil Gate Drive in Wollaston

Mon is Spring Cotswolds sportive from Cirenceter.

Details and links are on the calendar.

Another B2B2B is the Tour of the Wessex over the late May Bank Hol - Have entered this.  3 consecutive days of 100m+ from Somerton - 300+ entered already  This runs yearly whereas the pro/am event no longer does, due to lack of police support.

Only other multi-day UK event is one up in the Cairngorms (2 day - done this) but this is after your RAB.

Thanks, all brilliant ideas. Unfortunately had a large off going to work (bike versus pothole), double blowout, buckled front wheel AND i managed to hit the only street sign within 300 yards, OUCH. Blackberry clinic getting a visit this week.

Hi,

Body Limits works for me and I believe they are a lot less expensive than Blackberry.

Also discount for Team MK members.

Dave
