Daren and Tracey Haseldine FNSS round 1, Borough Hill, Daventry
Result Daren 32nd vet, Tracey 2nd lady.
Unfortunately at 8 degrees c with rain threatening it felt anything like summer yet it didn’t deter some 170 racers entering the event. The race format was 45 mins + 1 lap over a course of mixed terrain - fast grass/gravel through to dark wooded & technical with one boggy section leading into a steep climb, which everyone dismounted on, up to the finish. This was only the second time we had entered a mountain bike race – the first being a TMK race at Campbell Park back in 2001. So with no real previous experience or any training we both set off on a warm up lap of the course. What had we let ourselves in for!!!!? Too late now as we were at the start line in our TMK kit waiting to go. Senior men went first with a 2 minute gap before the vets & grand vets then the youths & ladies following a further minute behind. Taking the first lap cautiously we both progressed through the field & by lap 3 we were starting to enjoy ourselves getting used to the technical sections & using our road & tt skills to hammer the flat sections. We both finished the event happy that we (& our bikes) were in one piece & we learnt a great deal & look forward to racing again.
