Club 50 mile TT record blown away...

Words by Jason Gurney...

Another weekend and another trip to the Cirencester bypass only this time it was Mr Cannings and myself with 50 miles to complete against the clock, having been reading the forum posts on the ctt website the week prior to the event things wasn’t looking good….. myself thought it was going to be a two lap affair of the previous events 25 miler and was looking forward to riding but however due to roadwork’s at the start of the course there was many variations to the course that were being considered, however a day or two before the start a new course was devised the U46B/50 a three lap route with several roundabout junctions to contend with.

On the day we arrived with plenty of time and drove the course, the top end being the trickiest with four roundabouts, therefore was going to be the hardest part with traffic possibly backing up, however we got to the HQ and signed on, we where both nervous by the gale that was blowing  wondering if the trip was going to be worthwhile, after sorting out the bikes and rubbing in plenty of chamois cream we both slowly rode up to the start, Simon trying out his new panty liner for the first time since drawing blood after losing skin in the most sensitive of areas from his previous 50 mile TT efforts.

We started 6 minutes apart which was good for both of us as we could both time check each other at the turns, once on the course it was clear it was a cross wind, other than having to hold the bars a bit firmer it didn’t seem to impact too much on our rhythm and both of us set new personal bests with Simon on only his second attempt at this distance now stands at a very respectable 1.50.52 and finishing 13th overall and my efforts reducing the club record down to 1.47.06 for this distance.

Other local cyclist Jonathon Page of Bicester millennium cc also rode with a sound performance of 1.58.48.
