The answer is simple - Cyclocross. Pushing yourself, where getting muddy is encouraged not frowned upon and of course it’s an excuse for at least one more bike (n+1 always applies, right?). But it’s not just about the bike - if you have a mountain bike or a gravel bike, all-comers are welcome.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLocally we are privileged to be within the \u003ca href=\u0022https://centralcxl.org.uk/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003eCentral Cyclocross League\u003c/a\u003e, a group run by volunteers and committed Cx fanatics. For the roughly 12 race season, the majority of the events are either in MK or within a 60 min drive. The events are age based and no matter your standard, everyone gets a great race and a first-class experience. The league is inclusive, welcoming and a super sub-community of cycling culture at its best. Courses are usually about 2km in length, mostly grass, some road/paving and races are timed to be around 40 mins or so (for old fellas like me) or 50 mins plus for the fitter ‘yoof categories. Central League run children’s events starting with the under 8s (10 mins) and rising in steps of 2 years up to 16 for 40 mins. They also run a novice event for those wanting to try the discipline and then the age group races all follow on over the course of the day. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis season we had it all. Hard baked grass courses, challenging undulations, steep descents, deep mud pits, sand pits, torrential rain followed by baking sun and best of all, an actual race at a Brewery – what’s not to like? Something for everyone. And once finished, the Belgian Frites van is usually on hand to replenish depleted energy. I have to thank Storm Bert for helping me get my best result this season – the fewer riders that turn up, the better I seem to place…. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are interested in giving Cx a go and a little unsure, hit me up on Strava and I’m happy to give you an intro and some pointers. The best way to learn is just to get stuck-in and have a go. No-one is Matthieu Ven der Poel on their first outing (or 1000\u003csup\u003eth\u003c/sup\u003e…) but no matter where you start on the grid, you always get a race, you will take away great memories and make many new friends. The more you ride, the better you get and the more the enjoyment. \u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTeam MK has riders in most categories and it would be great to see more of you out there. Why not give it a go?
